②バースって、バス？
ノーランド・カレッジは、Bathにあります。日本語訳ではバースと表記されます。ロンドンから長距離バス（coach）で西へ2時間半、エイボン川に臨む世界的に有名な温泉地です。地名が英語bath（バス：風呂）の語源になったという説もありますが、正しくは暖めることを意味する古語からその名がつけられたとか。
バースは1世紀頃、ローマ帝国の支配下で保養地として繁栄しましたがその撤退とともに衰退し、18世紀に再発見され今日に至っています。1987年に世界文化遺産として登録され、大分県別府市と姉妹都市提携を結んでいます。ローマ浴場跡（写真：Roman Bath）はカレッジへの往復に利用していたバスセンターからそう遠くないところにあったのですが、私がそれに気がついたのは週末にホストファミリーに案内されてからのことでした。
(2) Bath? You Mean, That Bath?
Norland College is located in the city of Bath, which is pronounced baasu in Japanese. Two and a half hours’ ride on a coach west from London, Bath is a world-famous spa resort on the Avon. One explanation for the origin of the word,bath, is that it came from the name of this town, but I learned that the city was actually named after an ancient word that meant “to warm up.”
Bath was prosperous as a health resort under the Roman Empire in the first century A.D., but as the empire retreated, the city went into a decline until eventually the ruins of Roman buildings were discovered in the eighteenth century. The city of Bath became a World Heritage Site in 1987. It is also a sister city of Beppu, Oita. The ruins of the Roman baths (photo) were near the bus center I used to go to the college, but I didn’t notice them until my host family took me to the ruins one weekend.
