③ノーランダーって、知らなんだ？
ノーランド・カレッジは1892年に設立され、乳幼児ケア専門職者の養成校として今なお世界的に高く評価されています。創設者のエミリー・ワード女史（Emily Ward,1850-1930）はドイツの教育学者フレーベルに多大な影響を受け、入学を希望する者の選考にあたっては人柄を重視しました。卒業生はノーランダー（イメージはメアリー・ポピンズ！？）と呼ばれその職務に就くかぎり、実用性と優雅さを兼ね備えた制服（写真）を着用することや品位あふれるマナーが求められました。その結果、イギリス国内はもとより海外からも求人が殺到し、高い資質をもった乳幼児ケア専門職者として高い報酬を得るようになりました。しかし、時代の流れの中で、他の職業に就く者や大学進学を希望する者も少なくありません。カレッジは学位取得もできるようにカリキュラムの大幅な見直しをしています。
(3)What’s a Norlander?
Since its foundation in 1892, Norland College has been highly recognized in the world as a training institution for childcare specialists. Founder Emily Ward (1850-1930) was greatly influenced by German educator Friedrich Fröbel and focused on the personality of candidates in the selection of its students. The graduates were called Norlanders (imagine someone like Mary Poppins) and were expected to wear their uniforms (photo), which were both practical and elegant, and to act in a dignified manner while they were on duty. As a result, the school received a number of letters from employers, not only domestically but also internationally, looking for excellent employees, and the graduates received great compensation for their services as highly qualified childcare specialists. Currently, quite a large number of the graduates look for other types of jobs or go to university. The college is, therefore, reviewing its curricula so that the students can have the option to prepare for university.
