オーエンは1771年にウェールズ（イングランド）で商人の家庭に生まれました。10歳でロンドンに出て上流階級の人々を顧客にもつ店に徒弟修業に入り、その後、下層階級の人々を相手にする店に入り貧しい人々の置かれている境遇を知りました。結婚をきっかけに、義父からニューラナーク（スコットランド）工場の経営権を買い取り（1800）、1816年に性格形成学院（写真：動物チャートは教材／見学者にダンスを見せている図）を開校。
当時の教育法はひたすら暗記させムチによって厳しく導くものでしたが、五感を育み学びの意欲をかき立てさせることが重要であると考えていたオーエンは、ムチの使用を禁止しました。学院には「何千人にも及ぶ魅了された見学者たち」がイギリス国内からだけではなく、フランス・ドイツ・スイス・オーストリア・ロシア・アメリカなどから来ました。

Robert Owen was born into a merchant family in Wales in 1771. At ten, Owen started to work as an apprentice at a store for the upper class in London. Later, at a store for the lower class, he learned about the circumstances the poor were in. Upon marriage, he purchased the right of management of a plant in New Lanark, Scotland in 1800 from his father-in-law, and in 1816 he established the School and the New Institution for the Formation of Character. Teaching at the time depended mainly on intense memorization and strict guidance with whips, but believing that it was important to help students develop the five senses and to motivate them to learn, Owen prohibited the use of whips. ”Thousands of interested visitors” visited the institute not only from Great Britain but also from France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Russia, and the U.S.
